The ITRC’s New Alerts Tool Notifies You When a Breach Notice is Issued

Date: 05/11/2022
  • Data breaches are at an all-time high. However, compromised organizations are providing less information about data breaches. Rather than directly notifying consumers of a breach, businesses and other organizations increasingly issue news releases or post notices on websites to comply with state breach notice laws.
  • Research conducted by the Identity Theft Resource Center (ITRC) shows that 16 percent of people who receive a breach notice take no action to protect themselves; 48 percent only update passwords on the single compromised account even though they admit to using the same or similar password on all accounts.
  • With the ITRC’s notified Alerts tool, you can create a limited list of companies to receive an alert if a business where they have a relationship issues a data breach notice. Once you are notified of the breach, you will be provided with actionable information to take the proper steps to protect yourself.
  • To sign up, visit the ITRC’s notified Alerts page and enter your name, email and up to five organizations you want to be alerted to if they issue a breach notice.
  • To learn more about notified, visit the notifieddashboard to review information on the latest publicly reported data compromises. Visit org to get started.

ITRC notified Breach Alerts for Consumers

Data breaches are at an all-time high. However, compromised organizations are providing less information about data breaches. In fact, according to the Identity Theft Resource Center’s (ITRC) research, 16 percent of people who receive a breach notice don’t act on it to protect themselves. Forty-eight (48) percent only update passwords on a single compromised account even though they admit to using the same or similar passwords on all accounts.

Do you want data breach information on companies where you do business? The ITRC’s notified Alerts for consumers will inform you when companies you do business with issue a data breach notice – even if they do not send notifications directly to victims.

What are notified Breach Alerts?

The ITRC has launched a free data breach alert service for consumers where you can create a limited list of companies where you do business. You will receive an email alert when an organization on your list is entered into our comprehensive notified data breach database, along with recommended ways to protect yourself from identity misuse.

How to Subscribe to the ITRC’s notified Alerts

ITRC Data Breach Methodology

The ITRC gathers information about publicly reported data breaches from credible sources dating back to 2005 and offers access to this information through notified. The information contained in the notified database is offered “as is,” and the ITRC does not guarantee the accuracy of the information reported. The source(s) of information is listed for each data breach and entered into the notified database. Sources include government agencies, news media outlets, company news releases, regulatory filings and publications, industry and trade websites, and direct notices provided by consumers or companies. The notified database is updated daily, Monday through Friday, and on weekends in the event of a significant data breach.
