Assets Division Scam

Date: 02/08/2017

If a company claims to have a valuable package for you, the only surprise is how much it can cost you in the end.

Who Is It Targeting: Residents in Nassau Co, NY

What Is It: An assets or merchandise scam

What Are They After: Police in Nassau County have already warned residents of a new scam that claims to have valuable assets or merchandise for them. The only catch is they must pay the “processing fee” in order to claim the items or cash.

This is nothing new, and it’s so widespread that it’s surprising more cities aren’t already issuing PSAs. Whether it’s an unexpected package, claims that a long-lost wealthy relative left you money in their will, some kind of winnings for a contest you never entered, or another similar setup, it’s nothing but a fraud.

How Can You Avoid It:

  • Never give a caller your personal information or a payment method for something you were not expecting.
  • Remember, you will never have to pay unexpected upfront fees for anything that is genuine.
  • Even inheritances or lottery winnings are taxed after the fact, not before you receive them.
