What Is It: Phishing scam that steals credentials, funds

What Are They After: An Uber driver has reported being the victim of a phishing scam that claimed to originate from higher ups in the company. Callers who knew she worked for Uber (perhaps through the app itself) told her she needed to supply her login credentials in order to resolve an issue with her account.

The driver thought something seemed fishy, but the caller threatened that failure to comply would mean losing all the funds stored up in her driver account. She’d earned a substantial amount that day, and feared losing those funds. Once she gave them her login information and password, she was locked out of her account and those funds transferred elsewhere.

How Can You Avoid It:

• Never provide your personal information to someone who calls you without prior notice.
• If you’re in a situation like this, take the caller’s contact information then contact the company directly to verify.
• Don’t use a contact phone number for the company that the caller supplies, though, as it could be a redirected number or fake.
