Not many events bring the world together like the Olympics. Every two years, the best athletes compete on the global stage. The Paris Olympics run from July 26 to August 11, 2024, and the athletes are already training hard. However, they are not the only ones. While French officials prepare for cyberattacks, identity criminals are also making preparations so they can strike with new 2024 Olympic scams.

Who Are the Targets?

What is the Scam?

Scammers will look to exploit interest in the Olympics in many different ways, whether you are traveling to Paris or enjoying the Olympic Games from home. Some criminals may create malicious websites and apps that, on the surface, seem legitimate. However, they are malicious and are created to spread malware and steal personal information. Others will try to attack with phishing emails claiming prizes and special deals. In reality, the messages have malicious links.

What they Want

Scammers seize upon any opportunity to steal from their victims. 2024 Olympic scams based around fake ticket sales sites, fake travel offers, and counterfeit fan gear are used by criminals to steal your most sensitive personal information, gain access to your financial resources or apply malware to your devices.

How to Avoid 2024 Olympic Scams

  • Bookmark the official Olympic website so you can visit it easily without performing an internet search that might lead to malicious criminal websites.
  • Only purchase apparel from trusted websites that are authorized vendors.
  • If you are going to Paris, purchase your event tickets from official sales and broker websites. Make your travel and hotel accommodation plans through well-known websites or travel agents.
  • At home or in France, watch out for phishing emails. Identity criminals may look to trick you with sweepstake scams, claiming you won a trip to the Olympics or special deals that seem too good to be true. Don’t click on links or attachments in messages you are not expecting. Go to the source directly to verify the validity of the message.
