Identity Theft Resource Center BBB Business Review

The Identity Theft Resource Center Privacy Policy:

Your privacy is important to us.  The Identity Theft Resource Center maintains a strict privacy policy.  Any information that you provide to us will be kept in confidence.  It will only be shared on a need-to-know basis, even with our own employees.  The only time your case is shared with an outside person is with your specific permission.

We do not collect personal identifiable information (PII) on our website, or in any other manner.  If you choose to give PII to us via an electronic mail message, a phone call, or by postal mail, we will keep it confidential unless otherwise given permission to share it with specified people.  The manner this information will be shared will be dictated by your wishes.  For example, if you wish to be involved in media but specify that they may not contact you directly, we will observe that request.  In that situation an ITRC employee will contact you with the media's phone number or email address, so that you may contact them.

ITRC requests that you do not send us crime reports or your Social Security number in initial correspondence.  At no time should an ITRC employee or representative outside of the National ITRC office request your SSN.  The only PII that might be requested from you would be: name, city, state, zip, phone number(s), and email address.  Volunteers and ITRC employees have been instructed to immediately destroy Social Security Numbers that are sent to us.

We do not sell, rent, share, or otherwise disclose mailing lists or other PII.  We do maintain records of individuals who contact ITRC.  The purpose for this is to be able assist people who contact us with their case. These records may also be used as part of an ITRC study on crime trends however your PII will not be included in a study without your permission.

ITRC does not collect online contact information from a child under 13 without prior parental consent or direct parental notification.

ITRC advises all children under the age of 18 to seek parental consent before using our website, fact sheets, and published materials.

On occasion we are asked by the media or legislators to provide names of individuals who have experienced particular identity theft abuses.  We do not share such names or other PII unless you specifically authorize us to do so.
