Breaches Blast 2007 Record

The total number of breaches in on the Identity Theft Resource Center’s 2008 breach list surpassed the final total of 446 reported in 2007, more than 4 months before the end of 2008. As of 9:30 a.m. August 22nd, the number of confirmed data breaches in 2008 stood at 449.

Due to the recent announcement of a potential flaw in website routing, the ITRC strongly suggests that all consumers double check to make sure that all websites that they visit are indeed the actual websites that they are trying to access. The ITRC data breach count has reached an all-time high. Between January 1^st and June 27^th, the total number of data breaches recorded by the ITRC is 342, more than 69% greater than the same time period in 2007. The actual number of breaches is more than likely higher, due to underreporting, and the fact that some of the breaches reported, which affect multiple businesses, are listed as a single event.

The Identity Theft Resource Center (ITRC) released an important report today discussing the impact of identity theft victimization. Since 2003, the Identity Theft Resource Center has conducted annual victimization surveys to study the impact of identity theft crimes on its victims. Now in its fifth year, the report allows us to analyze the data, draw some conclusions, map trends and identify areas for further research. While ITRC reports the data in terms of percentages, it is critical that we remember those numbers are people. These are people with lives that have been interrupted, altered, torn apart and/or changed.
